FICTION WRITING
RETREAT

with

Nektaria Anastasiadou

Join us for a week-long fiction retreat with novelist Nektaria Anastasiadou, author of two novels, A Recipe for Daphne (Hoopoe/AUC Press) and Στα Πόδια της Αιώνιας Άνοιξης (Papadopoulos), and contributing editor at The Markaz Review.

Anastasiadou is the 2019 winner of the Zografeios Agon, a Greek-language literary award founded in 19th-century Constantinople. Her debut novel, A Recipe for Daphne, was shortlisted for the 2022 Runciman Award and longlisted for the 2022 Dublin Literary Award. It was also a finalist (with an Honorable Mention) in the 2022 Eric Hoffer Book Award and a 2021 Women’s National Book Association (US) Great Group Read. In 2023, she was a Writer in Residence at the University of Iowa’s prestigious International Writing Program.

Anastasiadou’s fiction retreat will be tailored to students’ needs and is open to all levels. It may include aspects of fiction writing such as point of view, dialogue, voice, setting, tension, and characterisation. For those just getting started, Anastasiadou will provide support in overcoming fear of the blank page, using one’s senses and experiences, and getting in touch with one’s deeper imagination (skills that we must continually refresh even at advanced levels). The retreat is open to all writers, beginners to experienced, working (or wishing to work) on fiction. Participants can write in English, Greek, Turkish, Spanish, Italian, or French.

SCHEDULE

The retreat begins and finishes on a Sunday. We will begin with a welcome dinner on Sunday evening (2 June), and finish with breakfast on the following Sunday (9 June). Workshops will take place between 3 and 7 June.

There are approximately three hours of teaching/talks/dedicated writing time each morning between Monday, 3 June, and Friday, 7 June. Afternoons are more flexible: there is dedicated writing time, and also suggestions for excursions in and around the village. A full-day excursion is scheduled for Saturday, 8 June. Taking part in all social activities of the retreat is entirely optional.

As is the case with all of our retreats, this is also very much a culinary retreat. Breakfast and dinner take place on the balcony of Oikia Roti (‘main retreat house’), and are prepared by our resident chef, Manolis Melissaris of The Lonely Olive. Coffee, tea, cakes and snacks are prepared daily by our resident pastry chef, Zafeiro Neofytou of Thursday Pastry. Both Manolis and Zafeiro stay with us for the duration of the retreat.

One of Topos’s stated aims is to support the local economy, and to give back to the village in any way we can. We have therefore partnered with the three village tavernas for all our lunches, as well as for our final dinner.

More details on the retreat schedule will be announced soon.
